Grit Is More Than Passion & A Predictor Of Success

Whenever we do anything with love, passion, determination and a bit of perseverance, we can usually push through difficult barriers. Quite often the only thing holding us back is ourselves. This calls for a bit of ‘grit’ on our part.

What is grit?

Making a decision to stick it out and putting in the hard work required to see the desired end result takes a lot of grit and courage. Courage is hard to measure but it’s a good indicator of our level of grit. Grit is about putting in the effort and never losing site of the big picture with determination and hard work to achieve our goals.

Resilience, confidence and optimism in conjunction with an excellence mindset can also help us to become, ‘grittier.’  How we persevere in achieving our goals will determine our endurance.

Maths teacher, Angela Lee Duckworth found that IQ wasn’t the only thing holding students who struggled back. The essential ingredient missing in those students was, ‘grit.’  On the other hand, grit is the determination factor allowing students to passionately persevere in order to achieve their goals.

In her Ted Talk, with over four million views, Angela goes on to explain how ‘grit’ is a predictor of success.

Spiritual Formation, Fear, and Following God’s Call

January 24, 2026 | Faith
