Where To Find Emergency Counselling in Australia

Australians have free and confidential counselling services available over the phone, online as a chat and by email for those struggling with mental health issues, suicidal thoughts, personal problems, relationships or family problems.  The types of calls received can range from urgent crisis calls to the less urgent matters. However all calls matter.

Counselling services specifically to help men who need to talk to other men are also available.  For children and young adults there’s a national service to help those who are having suicidal thoughts and are experiencing  personal, family, social, drug related and emotional problems.  Most of these services are accessible 24 hours a day.

FREE 24/7 COUNSELLING SERVICES

Lifeline  – An Australian charity providing crisis support and suicide prevention counselling on the phone 24/7 or those who need help immediately! Lifeline also has a Crisis support chat service available between 7pm and 4am AEST. Phone: 13 11 14

Kids Helpline  – Australia’s only 24/7 helpline for children and young people to combat suicide.  Information is available for teens, parents, teachers and carers on their website and there is also information available for teachers & School, for kids aged 5-12 and young people aged 13-25.  Phone: 1800 551 800.

MensLine Australia  – A service for men to talk to other men when they need counselling. Provide phone counselling 24/7, online counselling, video counselling and they also have a forum where men can socialise with other men to discuss common issues.  Phone: 1300 789 978

Suicide Call Back Service  – Another free 24 hour counselling service. The Suicide Call Back Service provides telephone and online counselling to those over 15 years of age fitting into these categories: People who are suicidal, People caring for someone who is suicidal, People bereaved by suicide, Health professionals supporting people affected by suicide.  Phone: 1300 659 467

Beyond Blue – Loads of information about Mental health is available on their website.  Help & Support available for all Australians. Phone Beyond Blue 24/7, email and chat service is also available. Phone: 1300 22 46 36

Other Helpful Resources

Headspace – The national youth mental health foundation dedicated to improving the wellbeing of young Australians.  They have an online chat service and also provide help to families with eheadspace, a free, safe and confidential place where 12 – 25 year olds and their family can chat, email or speak on the phone with a qualified youth mental health professional. Phone: 1800 650 890

Sane – provides information about mental health issues and helpful resources like a helpline on weekdays 9-5pm (AEST) Visit their website for an online ‘Helpline Chat, to send a ‘Helpline Email’ or to talk to peers on the ‘Sane Forums’.  Phone: 1800 18 7263.

Professional Counsellors (Paid Services)

There are many benefits in visiting a qualified professional counsellor such as interacting face to face with a trained unbiased person who will listen to your problems in a confidential one on one consultation. Search for one in your area; visit CCAA to search for a Christian counsellor near you. Visit ACA to search for a counsellor near you.  Visit your doctor to discuss your concerns who can provide a mental health assessment and may direct you to local counselling services and resources.
